Good Saturday Morning, Florence Bixby Elementary School Families,

There is a lot to share to support your efforts as an actively involved participant in your child’s education (also known as The Key to the American Dream)!  Ready?  Set? Support!...

Success Trait/Growth Mindset Quote of the Week -- “It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.” –Coach John Wooden.  Remember to memorize, model and expect your child to practice demonstrating the meaning of this success quote, not only to reach her/his Personal Best, but to have a chance to win a free pizza from Pieology!  On a side note, we will also be celebrating Coach John Wooden’s birthday (October 14th) at our morning assembly on Monday, October 9th at 8:00 a.m..  Come join the fun!:)

Salute to Veterans and Active Duty Servicewomen/Servicemen -- We are eagerly anticipating our second annual awards presentation and recognition ceremony on November 9th at 7:45 a.m. on the playground to celebrate Veterans Day.  All 492 students, from preschool to fifth grade, will wave their own American Flags, and we will present our honorees with a small gesture of gratitude, in front of over 700 appreciative family members, students, dignitaries, and staff.  If you or someone you know is a veteran or active servicewoman/serviceman, please email me at splatis@lbschools.net TODAY (with the subject: Veterans Day Celebration) so that we can include as many honorees as possible.  Last year, we honored over 20 heroes, and we would love to see that number at least doubled!

YES, There IS School This Monday! -- Monday, October 9th is NOT  holiday.  Please Arrive on time!

PTA Meeting, Tuesday, October 10 @ 6:15 in Bungalow 24 -- Do not miss out on your chance to play a vital, active role in your child’s education.  Join our award-winning PTA for a very informative meeting, with special guest speaker Lauren Simpson.  Ms. Simpson is an expert in the field of helping our young people to stay safe on the internet and to be critical consumers of information -- both essential digital literacy skills for College and Career Readiness, as well as maintaining healthy “online hygiene.”  FREE PIZZA, FREE CHILDCARE, FREE QUALITY INFORMATION!!

Picture Day, Tuesday, October 10th -- We will take our official school pictures for memories that will last a lifetime on Tuesday, October 10th!  This is a free-dress day.  While uniforms are still welcome, if your child is in free dress, this is a friendly reminder that all attire needs to be consistent with our dress code -- no open-toed shoes, no inappropriate logos on shirts, skirts that are the appropriate length (including, but not limited to no shorter than the student’s fingertips when arms are held straight against the leg), no spaghetti straps.  Thank you, and be sure to practice that Scholarly Smile with your child this weekend:).

Accessing Your Child’s Online Math Unit 1 Math Assessment Data -- All students in grades two through five take the End of Unit math assessment online (about every six to eight weeks).  This past week, all of our third and fourth grade students took the online math test.  As a school, we analyze these results very purposefully and intentionally, in order to both celebrate successes, as well as identify opportunities for improvement and re-teaching.  As an active participant in your child’s education, It is VERY important for you to have this information, too.  Your child’s online assessment results can be accessed by logging in to ParentVue (https://parentlbusd.lbschools.net), and then going to “Assessments and More” in the left-hand margin.  You are highly encouraged to celebrate your child’s successes along with her/him, as well as work closely with your child/ren’s teacher/s to identify opportunities for improvement and ideas for best supporting her/him at home.

JiJi Math Progress Update by Grade Level -- We know that completing 100% of the syllabus of JiJi Math (our research-proven, standards-based online math program) is highly correlated with successful attainment of the learning standards.  94% of the students that scored Met/Exceeded Standards on the state SBAC math test last year had also completed 100% of the JiJi Math syllabus.  By the end of October, all students in grades ETK-5 should have completed at least 24% of the syllabus/lessons in order to stay on track to complete 96% of the syllabus by the time that testing begins in April/May.  In order to help support our goal by doing JiJi Math at home, here are current progress levels, by grade (as of 9/30/17).  1. Fifth grade (13.6%), 2. Third grade (12%), 3. Second grade (7.4%), 4. Fourth grade (6.6%), 5. First grade (3.6%), 6. Kindergarten (3.4%),  7. ETK/TK (1.7%).

PTA Fit-a-Thon Update -- Yes, you heard correctly from your child/ren… Mr. Platis promised your child/ren at Morning Assembly that if we reach our fundraising goal, he will both get slimed AND he will kiss a pig in front of all 492 students! Kind of gross?  Yep.  For a great cause -- supporting the education of all of our students through our award-winning PTA? You better believe it!  Keep an eye out for information on our only fundraiser of the year, with 99.97% of the funds going directly to our PTA to support our school (as opposed to catalog sales, which companies typically take up to 50% of the profit).  I can not wait to see our kids getting even more fit for a great cause on Thursday, November 9th!

Arrive on Time Program Update -- This week, we increased our expectation to include 100% attendance and 100% of students arriving on time!  To nobody’s surprise, our families, students and staff stepped up to the challenge and did an outstanding job of being Dedicated and taking Action (two critical traits on Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success) to show that we all value a quality education for every student, every minute, of every day!  Congratulations to the fourth and fifth grade students in Mr. Wilkerson’s class for having met our success criteria four out of five days last week and earning a popsicle party last Friday after school!

Thank you, and make it a Personal Best weekend and week ahead!

With continued gratitude,

--Sam Platis, Proud Principal, Florence Bixby Elementary School
