State law requires all public schools to create a School Accountability Report Card (SARC). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about your child's school, which includes:

  • School Description and Mission
  • School Programs and Instructional Materials
  • Opportunities for Parent Involvement
  • Test Results
  • Safety Plan
  • Facilities

We invite you to view the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for your child's school.  You can find your school's SARC here.

Good Sunday Afternoon, Florence Bixby Elementary School Families,

The Super Bowl.  It is one of the most widely viewed television broadcasts every year.  The Big Game is beamed via satellite to virtually every corner of the globe.  Inevitably, everyone wants to know… Who will the winner will be?  What will the final score be?  What spectacular plays ended up going viral?  Who ran for the most yards?  Who held up the Most Valuable Player trophy at the end of the game?

With our school-wide focus on Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and the traits which lead to us doing our Personal Best, from what I have read (and by no means am I an expert or an authority on Coach Wooden), I would venture to say that he would probably not ask any of the above questions.  He believed in coaching processes and systems that would lead to success.  And, if everyone showed Hard Work, Determination, Skill, Action, Poise and all of the other success traits that he memorialized in writing, success would follow much more often than not.  While he was a fierce competitor, he did not focus on winning, which he illustrated by saying, ““If there’s anything you could point out where I was a little different, it was the fact that I never mentioned winning.”  He would not highlight newspaper headlines of his 10 championships.  He refrained from talking about perfect seasons.  Most remarkably, at times, he would even hold practice without having the players even touch a ball.  That way, his team could rehearse plays and formations, without any emphasis on who was scoring how many points.

Much like Coach Wooden’s approach, when we work together as families, students, and teachers to encourage and expect the Personal Best out of each other and ourselves, much more often than not, the outcome is success.  Students coming to school everyday, on time and ready to learn; teachers being prepared with outstanding lessons for all students to develop critical skills and concepts; families providing encouragement, support and being actively involved in their child/ren’s education.  As we continue to commit ourselves to doing our Personal Best, let us also continue to remember that we all play a critical role in helping to lay a path along all of our students’ journey to success!

With continued gratitude,

--Sam Platis, Proud Principal, Florence Bixby Elementary School

And now for the detailed portion of the Weekly Principal's Update...

1.  Coach Wooden Success Trait/Growth Mindset Quote of the Week -- “It is amazing how much can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit.” --Coach John Wooden.  Students who memorize and recite this quote to Mr. Platis will be entered into our weekly drawing for a free pizza from Pieology or an entree from Chick-fil-A!

2.  Enrollment Process for New Florence Bixby Students Living in Our School’s Enrollment Area Begins January 29th!  Stop by the Office, and Read More Information here:  -- Our enrollment at Florence Bixby Elementary School continues to grow.  Just two years ago, we only had two Kindergarten classes, and now we have grown to three Kindergarten classes, a full TK class, a full Early TK class and a preschool class!  As you can see, many, many more families are choosing our high-quality instructional program that is just steps away from their home.  Thank you for your continued confidence in our staff, and the value that you place on an education from Florence Bixby Elementary!  Starting on January 29th, enrollment for new students living in the Florence Bixby enrollment area will begin.  New families will be provided with specific information that they will need to provide to the school to enroll.  Our office staff is committed to providing excellent customer service, not only to our existing families, but also those who choose to enroll their child in our school for the 2018-2019 school year.  Click this link for additional information on enrolling your new student at Florence Bixby Elementary --  -- and please do not hesitate to call with any questions you (or your neighbors:) might have about this process!

3. Achievement Reports (report cards) Posted in Parent Vue on Monday, February 5th -- Our teachers have been showing Determination, Hard Work, Skill and Action with their work to produce highly informative Achievement Reports (formerly known as “report cards”:) for all 483 students.  These critical documents will serve as another valuable “map and compass” to guide our work with students and families, as well as provide invaluable information to teachers who will teach your child/ren in the coming years.  Thank you for reading your child/ren’s Achievement Report closely, having a rich discussion with her/him/them about the comments and ratings, celebrating successes, and setting goals and action plans for continuous improvement.  As always, should you have any questions about Achievement Reports, please do not hesitate to reach out via phone, email, or in person to your child’s teacher.  Your role as an actively involved family member continues to be a critical ingredient to our recipe for success!

4.  JiJi Math Progress Update by Grade Level -- Our friendly competition is a motivating factor in doing our Personal Best  Fourth grade has narrowly pulled ahead of fifth grade, and Kindergarten is back ahead of first grade by the narrowest of margins!  Research shows that students who regularly and efficiently progress through the JiJi math syllabus are more successful with developing their understanding of key mathematical concepts and skills.  Here are the current grade level JiJi average syllabus completion rates, in descending order (as of 1/20/18).  1. Second Grade (44.1%), 2. Third Grade (41.9%), 3. Fourth Grade (40.9%), 4. Fifth Grade (39.5%), 5. Kindergarten (33.8%), 6. First Grade (33.2%), .

5.  “Arrive on Time, Every Minute, Every Day” Update -- Thank you to the families who’s Hard Work, Action and Determination ensured that their child/ren benefited from a high-quality education, every minute, every day last week.   As a reminder, students arriving late will meet briefly (about 30 seconds) with me before going to class to develop a plan for arriving at school on time.  Families of late arriving and/or frequently absent students will also continue to be contacted to see how the school might be able to better support our shared commitment to ensuring that all students are at school every day, on time.

Enjoy a Personal Best weekend and week ahead!

With continued gratitude,

--Sam Platis, Proud Principal, Florence Bixby Elementary School
