Bixby News

The school district has been informed of an extensive Southern California Edison electrical outage that will take place tonight affecting the main Administration Building at 1515 Hughes Way. This power outage will interrupt all computer and Internet access districtwide on Tuesday, May 22. While power will be restored by the early morning, we anticipate all computer services will be unavailable until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22.

These meetings help the school district to strategize programs to support Pacific Islander students.  View the attached flier for details and a schedule of meetings through September.

State law requires all public schools to create a School Accountability Report Card (SARC). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about your child's school, which includes:

  • School Description and Mission
  • School Programs and Instructional Materials
  • Opportunities for Parent Involvement
  • Test Results
  • Safety Plan
  • Facilities

We invite you to view the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for your child's school.  You can find your school's SARC here.

1.  Success Trait/Growth Mindset Quote of the Week -- “Just do the best you can. No one can do more than that.” – John Wooden.  Students who memorize and recite this quote to Mr. Platis will be entered into our weekly drawing for a free pizza from Pieology!

2.  Dual Immersion Language Program Plans for Florence Bixby! -- Exciting news for our community!  Our District is considering starting a Dual Immersion language program, starting with our incoming Kindergarten students for the 2018-2019 school year.  Beginning with next year’s Kindergarten students whose families select the program, this research-proven model of instruction results in students becoming fluent in English and Spanish.  Next year’s Kindergarten families choosing not to participate will still have access to the traditional instructional program in English. This truly is an outstanding opportunity for our students, school and community, as Dual Immersion programs in the District have not only achieved remarkable academic results, but also provide students with the college and career readiness advantage of becoming literate in two languages.  For more information, please join us for a community meeting on Tuesday, May 15th at 6:00 p.m. in our auditorium.

3. State Testing Continues (Grades 3-5)  -- One very important way that we measure our growth, progress and success as a school, as well as identify opportunities for improvement, is through state testing.  This week, students in grades three through five continue their testing schedule. Our combined efforts, including Hard Work, Action, Determination, and Skill have served to prepare our students well.  Especially important success habits for students during testing time include eating a well-balanced breakfast, getting eight to 10 hours of sleep, and coming to school on time each day. Testing begins promptly at 8:00 a.m.  Thank you for your continued support to help ensure our students reach their Personal Best!

4.  The Florence Bixby Art Expo is Here! -- All 464 students are encouraged to enter our school’s Art Expo!  Coordinated by Mr. Wilkerson and supported by our Early TK through fifth grade teachers, this is a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their art skills.  All student entries will be displayed during Open House on May 24. We hope to see all of our students’ Hard Work and Skills on display for our Art Expo!

5.  JiJi Math Progress Update by Grade Level -- Our friendly competition is a motivating factor in doing our Personal Best.  Research shows that students who regularly and efficiently progress through the JiJi math syllabus are more successful with developing their understanding of key mathematical concepts and skills.  Here are the current grade level JiJi average syllabus completion rates, in descending order (as of 4/28/18). 1. Fourth Grade (79.7%), 2. Third Grade (72.3%), 3. Kindergarten (64.7%), 4. Fifth Grade (62.4%), 5. Second Grade (61.4%), 6. First Grade (56.5%).

7.  “Arrive on Time, Every Minute, Every Day” Update -- Thank you to the families who’s Hard Work, Action and Determination ensured that their child/ren benefited from a high-quality education, every minute, every day last week.   As a reminder, students arriving late will meet briefly (about 30 seconds) with me before going to class to develop a plan for arriving at school on time. Families of late arriving and/or frequently absent students will also continue to be contacted to see how the school might be able to better support our shared commitment to ensuring that all students are at school every day, on time.

Enjoy a Personal Best week ahead!

With continued gratitude,

--Sam Platis, Proud Principal, Florence Bixby Elementary School
